Why Fat Distribution Matters as Much as Fat Total
Waist-to-hip ratio is a simple proxy for where your body stores fat. Abdominal ("visceral") fat sits closer to the liver and major organs and is more metabolically active than fat stored around the hips and thighs, which is why two people at the same BMI can carry meaningfully different cardiometabolic risk.
The thresholds used above come from the WHO's 2008 report on Waist Circumference and Waist-Hip Ratio, which classifies a ratio above 0.90 in men and above 0.85 in women as associated with substantially increased risk.

BMI can't tell where weight sits on your body. Two people with identical BMI can carry very different amounts of visceral (abdominal) fat, which is the fat most strongly linked to cardiometabolic risk — WHR captures that distribution.
?How do I measure waist and hip correctly?
Measure your waist at the narrowest point between your ribs and hips (roughly navel level), and your hips at the widest point around your buttocks. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin, and measure at the end of a normal exhale.
