How This Estimate Is Built
This is a personal footprint estimate across four everyday activities — home electricity, driving, air travel, and diet — not a certified corporate or organizational GHG inventory. Each activity is multiplied by an emission factor (the CO2-equivalent released per unit of that activity) and the four results are added together.
What each factor assumes: home electricity uses a U.S. national-average grid emission factor of about 0.85 lbs CO2/kWh. Your actual rate depends heavily on your local utility's fuel mix (a hydro- or nuclear-heavy grid emits far less than a coal-heavy one). Driving assumes 25 MPG and the EPA factor of 19.6 lbs CO2 per gallon of gasoline. Air travel uses a flat estimate of 1,100 lbs CO2 per round-trip flight. Diet uses category averages that vary by how meat-heavy your eating pattern is.
Worked example. At the defaults (400 kWh/month, 10,000 miles/year, 2 round-trip flights, and a "Balanced" diet), home electricity contributes about 4,080 lbs, driving about 7,840 lbs, flights 2,200 lbs, and diet 5,500 lbs, for a total of 19,620 lbs (about 8.9 metric tons). This is what this calculator's defaults show above.

The Emission Identity
Limitations. This model covers four common activity categories using national averages. It doesn't capture local grid mix, goods and services you purchase, home heating fuel, or waste, so it's a simplified estimate rather than a complete personal or household inventory.

CO2 equivalent (CO2e) is a metric used to compare the emissions from various greenhouse gases on the basis of their global-warming potential.
?How many trees offset 1 ton?
On average, one mature tree sequesters about 48 pounds of CO2 per year, which works out to roughly 46 trees to offset one metric ton (2,204.62 lbs) annually. That's the ratio this calculator uses for its tree count.
?Is diet really that impactful?
Yes. Animal agriculture accounts for nearly 15% of global emissions. Switching from heavy meat to plant-based can halve your personal footprint.
